New Delhi: The Delhi University is set to expand its outreach programme for the transgender students for the next academic session. Last year, DU established transgender resource centre to provide educational counseling to transgender students.
In 2018, over two dozen transgender students reached out to DU resource centre for admission related procedure, but not one student took admission in regular courses.
According to a report in Hindustan Times, around 100 transgender students have applied to various courses in Delhi University since the transgender category was introduced in 2015.
“After last year, we saw that our centre-based model was unlikely to get us the desired output and encourage more transgenders to pursue higher education. So this time around, we are focusing on outreach to see if it works better,” the report quoted Rajesh, an associate professor at the Department of Adult, Continuing Education and Extension.
The DU resource centre has also approached voluntary organisations to help it in outreach-based programmes. Under the partnership, the resource centre and voluntary organisations would launch counselling programmes by visiting different communities.
"We aim to reach out to at least 1,000 transgenders. For that, we will be reaching out to at least two-three organisations every week," Rajesh said.
Last week, the University opened online registration process for admissions to various undergraduate programmes. The online registration will continue till June 14.
A team of volunteers associated with the resource centre have also conducted sensitisation programmes in various schools on inclusive education.
"The sensitisation has to happen at elementary level as well. Our focus is also on providing “an information package” to transgenders so that those looking to avail education know how to go about things," the report further quoted Rajesh as saying.
